In 2018, Humanities Commons honored one of the most time-honored traditions of the season: summer camp. We hosted a virtual summer camp for users old and new. It helped participants to update, build, and achieve an outstanding digital presence through HC. Please check out the discussions from Summer 2018 to see the fantastic work and thought-provoking conversations that our participants took part in last year.

In 2019, we hosted two Humanities Commons Summer Refresh Workshops. These events encouraged you to set aside time to update your digital presence on HC. The group is a space to ask questions, connect with other users, and see the various exciting ways that other scholars use HC to build their presence online.

You can use these materials as you update your presence on the Commons.

Welcome to the last day of our first Humanities Commons Summer Refresh Workshop! If you missed out on joining us this time around or if you’d like to do it all over again, you’re in luck! We will do another round of this workshop in August, from Monday, August 5th to Friday, August 9th.

If you were able to participate in this round of #HCSummerRefresh, congratulations! You’ve made it to the finish line! Take time to admire your updated digital presence – you’ve earned it!

      To complete today’s focus…

      • Participate in today’s discussion by responding to the prompts below. This will allow you to reflect on your work this week and help you begin to make a plan for updating and maintaining your HC account going into the future.
      • Make your participation in this workshop official so that you can put it on your CV! Respond to this discussion post letting us know that you’ve successfully completed the workshop.

      Discussion:

      • Of which update or creation from this week are you most proud? (share a link!)
      • Which day/task from this workshop was most/least helpful?
      • How can this workshop be improved for its second implementation in August?
      • What did you learn this week? What questions do you still have?

Thanks so much to everyone who participated! I really enjoyed thinking HC features through with you and I hope you benefited from the time you set aside for this workshop!

Caitlin, thank you so much for doing this work! I’m late to the boat; properly joined the Workshop today and am still figuring out my academic online presence.

I’ve only completed some tasks, but it’s a start. So I’m proudest of the bare minimum – having set up my profile at all. Step by step! Perhaps I’ll be back in August, to flesh out my profile even more and connect in a more conscious way with people in my fields.

Thanks again – I really appreciate the guidance and inspiration!

Hi all-sorry for the late post (I had family in town all day yesterday).

Caitlin, thanks as always for organizing the Summer Camp. The questions that you pose are excellent ways to reflect on our professional practice. I’m sketching out some ideas over the next few weeks about how to incorporate HC work into one of my classes this term; work that comes directly from our discussions. While I won’t be able to facilitate in August (because my diss prospectus isn’t going to write itself), I’m looking forward to the next wave of conversations. Until then…

      /C

Hi, I’m being a bit late by sneaking this post in today. But I just wanted to echo the thanks already made to Caitlin for hosting this camp and providing us with this great opportunity to learn and reflect.

As a complete newbie to HC I found the whole week to be useful. Highlights though have included –

      1. finding groups of like-minded researchers and professionals in my field (I’ve joined HuMetricsHSS https://hcommons.org/groups/humetricshss-1370894327/)
      2. creating my profile and generally navigating around the site. This inadvertently lead me to discover the HC Trello site where further development of the HC is planned and tracked. https://trello.com/b/4kun971B/roadmap  Loved discovering new ways to manage time and have a play with new tools.
      3. discovering HC sites! Though I haven’t created a site yet this is something I’ll keep on my radar for future projects.
      4. Last but not least, being alerted to new research and teaching inspiration! Thanks to the groups I now follow I was alerted to a great presentation from the ALI Scholarly Librarianship Leadership Conference 2018 https://twitter.com/lastic/status/1149611906941906949

I like the approachable and welcoming tone everyone has given to their interactions too, so thank you everybody, and good luck with your future research endeavours!

@irinasadovina Welcome to HC! I look forward to speaking with you more in August! 🙂 In the meantime, please let me know if you have any questions as you build on HC.

      @cgleek
Thanks for all your help with this first round! I’m excited to hear that you’re planning to incorporate HC into your upcoming class! Please reach out if you have any questions while working on that course, I’d love to hear how it goes.
